Privacy Policy
Last updated: October 11, 2026
Eskal is designed to keep your data on your iPhone. No account, no server of our own: your schedule, your apps, your object and your nights stay on the device. This policy explains what leaves it, where it goes and why.
Data controller
Eskal is published by Amaury GAU, the controller of the processing described here. For any question: hello@geteskal.com.
This policy applies to the Eskal iOS app and its website.
In short
- No account: Eskal never asks for an email address, password or phone number.
- Your settings, your unlock object and its photo, your profile name and your night history stay on your iPhone.
- Eskal never knows the names of the apps you block: iOS only gives it opaque tokens.
- Usage statistics are sent to PostHog to improve the onboarding and the offer. They are never linked to your identity or to your subscription.
- Payment goes through Apple, and the subscription is managed with RevenueCat.
- No ads, no cross-app tracking, no sale of data.
Data kept on your iPhone
To work, Eskal stores the following data in its on-device storage, shared between the app and its Screen Time extensions. It is never sent to us:
- the apps and categories you choose, as tokens provided by Apple: Eskal never sees their name or identifier;
- your bedtime and wake-up time for each evening of the week, and your reminder setting;
- your unlock object: the value and type of its barcode, and the cut-out photo taken when you set it up;
- the blocking state and the number of emergency unlocks used this month;
- the night log (bedtime, wake-up, unlock, emergency, access removed, with their time), which powers your streak, stops and achievements;
- your optional profile name, and the look of your character and boat;
- your onboarding answers (for example the time spent on your phone in bed) and your sound and haptics preferences.
This data stays until you change it or delete the app. It may be included in your iPhone backups (iCloud or computer), handled by Apple according to your settings.
Screen Time, camera and sensors
Screen Time: Eskal uses Apple’s Screen Time tools to block the chosen apps at night. You grant and remove this permission in iOS Settings. Eskal does not read your screen time: that information stays with Apple and on your device.
Camera: it is used to photograph your unlock object and read its barcode. The image is analyzed live on the iPhone and never saved, except the object photo you choose to take, which stays on the device.
Motion: the voyage scene may read the tilt of your phone for a subtle animation. These readings stay in memory while the scene is shown and are never saved or sent.
Notifications: reminders (before bedtime, end of trial, object to choose) and the morning alert that opens the scanner are scheduled on the iPhone. No data is sent to produce them.
Usage statistics (PostHog)
To understand where the onboarding gets stuck and improve Eskal, the app sends usage events to PostHog, an analytics tool. For example: an onboarding step shown, a permission granted or declined, an answer picked from a list, how you heard about Eskal, the offer being shown, a trial starting, a technical purchase failure, a restore, or the reason picked before unsubscribing.
These events come with standard technical information (iPhone model, iOS and Eskal versions, language, time zone) and a random identifier created at install, which links the steps of the same journey. Deleting the app erases this identifier.
They are never linked to your identity, your subscription identifier, your Apple account or the device advertising identifier. Eskal never sends free text, your profile name, app names, barcodes or photos. Your IP address is only used to deliver the data: PostHog is configured not to store it.
Legal basis: our legitimate interest in measuring and improving the app, limited to statistics. Events are kept for up to 25 months. You can object to this measurement by writing to hello@geteskal.com.
Subscription (Apple and RevenueCat)
Purchases are made and paid through Apple, on the App Store. We never see your payment details, your Apple ID or your name.
Eskal uses RevenueCat to show the offers and their prices, validate purchases and check whether a subscription is active. For this, RevenueCat receives the App Store transaction information (product, purchase, renewal and expiry dates, storefront country, trial status), a random identifier created by RevenueCat, and technical data (device model, versions, IP address).
Legal basis: performance of your subscription. This data is kept for the duration of the subscription, then as long as our legal obligations require. The RevenueCat identifier is never sent to PostHog.
Contacting support
“Help & report a bug” and “Report a bug” open an email draft. It contains the Eskal version, the iOS version and the iPhone model, and may contain your subscription identifier to find a purchase. Nothing is sent without you: you review it and choose to send it.
We use these messages to answer you, based on our legitimate interest in providing support, and keep them for up to three years after the last exchange.
Website
The Eskal website sets no cookies and uses no analytics. To choose the language, it reads the connection country provided by the host, without storing it. As with any website, the host may keep a technical log of connections, including IP addresses, for a limited time and for security purposes.
Recipients
- Apple: app distribution, payment, Screen Time, notifications and App Store rating requests;
- RevenueCat, Inc.: subscription management;
- PostHog, Inc.: usage statistics;
- public authorities, only when required by law.
We do not sell or rent any data. Eskal does not access the device advertising identifier and does no cross-app tracking.
Transfers outside the European Union
RevenueCat and PostHog are US companies: some data may be processed in the United States. These transfers rely on the EU-US Data Privacy Framework where the provider is certified, or on the European Commission’s standard contractual clauses.
Retention
- Data on the iPhone: until you change it or delete the app.
- Usage statistics: up to 25 months.
- Subscription data: for the duration of the subscription, then as long as our legal obligations require.
- Support emails: up to three years after the last exchange.
Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct, delete, restrict, object to and port your data, and, in France, to set instructions for your data after your death.
Most of your data is only on your iPhone: you change it in the app and erase it by deleting Eskal. For anything else, write to hello@geteskal.com. Since Eskal has no account, we may ask for something that helps us find your data, such as a purchase receipt.
Screen Time, camera and notification permissions can be removed at any time in iOS Settings. Without Screen Time permission, Eskal can no longer block apps.
You may also lodge a complaint with the CNIL (France) or the data protection authority of your country.
Children
Eskal is not intended for children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect their data. If you believe a child has sent us data, write to us and we will delete it.
Security
Eskal’s data stays in iOS storage, protected by your iPhone’s encryption and passcode. Exchanges with Apple, RevenueCat and PostHog are encrypted. Since no method is foolproof, we first limit what leaves the device.
Changes
This policy may change, for example if a service changes. The date at the top shows the latest version. If a change is significant, we will let you know in an appropriate way.
